Acquiring Travel Insurance in Singapore
While vacations offer the most relaxing experiences, nothing is more stress-free than knowing your vacation is protected by travel insurance. Everyone likes to think that nothing can go wrong on a vacation, but inevitably something always does. The difference between those who recover part of the losses and those who are stuck with the bill is a comprehensive travel insurance package. Traveling from Singapore to abroad destinations offers exciting food, world renown entertainment, cultural wonders and technology centers, but you are still traveling to unknown destinations. That means that you need a high quality travel insurance to cover medical costs, lost luggage, travel delays, theft and loss of belongings. NTUC Travel insurance has one of the best travel insurance packages for those heading overseas to the big city and here’s why.
What does travel insurance commonly cover?
It’s important to note that travel insurance policies protect travelers financially when death, injury, sickness, theft, natural disasters, loss, damage or legal liability threaten a good vacation. The amount that is paid by the travel insurance company depends on the condition and maximum benefit limitations of the package.
There are some things to remember about how travel protection insurance works for medical costs as well. For instance, if you are injured or fall ill, your medical expenses are covered. If you are able to recover any of the funds from another source such as the motorist who hit you, the insurer only has to pay the amount that you cannot recover. In addition, medical expenses require a written report of medical conditions from your medical practitioners with original medical bills and receipt.
There are other insurance plans that provide for very specific events and also offer special considerations, such as coverage for an act of terrorism or AIG’s travel insurance trip cancellation benefits that start as early as 60 days prior to when the trip starts.
Travel protection insurance also provides reimbursement for several different charges and losses including:
- Traveler replacement in case of a trip cancellation
- Mobile telephone call charges received overseas
- Losses from fraudulent credit card usage
- Losses from entertainment ticket and frequent flyer points
- loss of use of green fees
- Medical and accident dental expenses
- Approved claims from the first dollar
- Baggage and travel delays while in Singapore and overseas for over 6 hours
- Fight diversions costs to another destination
- Flight over-booking
- Loss of jewelry from theft
Other insurance plans also include that they cover all ages of those going on the trip whether you’re going with your partner, baby, child or elderly parent. Insurance can also protect your child if he or she has certain needs through the Child Education Grant. You also receive benefits like “Golf Advantage” and pet care.
You also don’t want to think about what could be happening at home while you’re away. A variety of insurance plans cover household contents while away from home, so you don’t have to worry.
The greatest comfort is knowing that you are protected with insurance for everything that could happen that you don’t want to. Traveling to an overseas destination from Singapore can be frightening, but when you’re protected, it’s a breeze.
What are some common exclusions?
There are some common claims and items not covered by travel agencies in Singapore. You really should avoid some of these situations as much as possible because you will not receive compensation, and it could seriously alter your trip for the worst.
One thing that you must do is get a physical exam in Singapore before you leave for an overseas trip where you need travel protection insurance. If you travel overseas with a condition or against medical advice, you won’t be covered by insurance. In addition, you won’t be covered if you deliberately injure yourself, commit or attempt suicide, commit a criminal act, provoke assault or place yourself in obvious danger unless you are trying to save someone’s life. The effects of alcohol and drugs play a huge role in your claim as well. You aren’t covered if you suffer an injury while intoxicated.
In addition, those who are pregnant should not travel out of Singapore and expect to be covered by insurance if something happens to their child. Pregnancy, childbirth, abortion, miscarriage and other complications are simply not covered by travel protection insurance.
Mental, nervous and sleep disorders that require medical attention also do not qualify for a claim. If you have a diagnosed psychological or psychiatric disorder including anxiety and depression, you won’t receive compensation.
Diseases like AIDS, HIV, HIV-related illnesses and other sexually transmitted diseases are also not covered.
If you live on the dangerous side and like to get your adrenaline going, you’ll also find yourself not covered by travel protection insurance in Singapore. If you take part in flying other than a licensed passenger carrying aircraft; join a speed or racing contest other than on foot; suffer an accident whole driving on a motor race track; and take part in dangerous activities or sports that include dragon boating, caving, potholing, mountaineering, rock climbing, scuba diving, sky diving, hang-gliding, parachuting, trekking or hunting. You can talk to a travel protection insurance agency beforehand to get an agreement in writing that includes some of these activities.
Travel protection insurance doesn’t protect you if you take part in naval, military or air forces training or if you participate in operations of an offensive nature planned or implemented by civil or military authorities. It also doesn’t cover the results of war, riot, revolution or a civil rebellion.
While most common injuries and sicknesses are covered, you won’t find coverage for those that relate to directly or indirectly accelerated by the use, release or escape of nuclear materials that result in radiation. Insurance also doesn’t cover the application of pathogenic, poisonous, biological or chemical materials.
If you break government regulations or fail to adhere to precautions as set by authorities, then you also will not be eligible for a claim. This means that you didn’t take precautions to protect yourself or your property.
If you travel to one of these countries, your claims are also not eligible:
- Democratic Republic of Congo
If you happen to go on an adventure where you engage in manual work with a machine or tools involved in offshore work, such as mining, aerial photography or explosive handling. You may not be covered, but you will have to have an agreement in writing from the insurance company.
Unattended items left at airports, train stations, ferries, buses, hotels, resorts and other areas where you’re staying are not covered.
If your claim is covered in part by another party such as the resort, hotel, tour operator, travel agency or other accommodation provider, you most likely won’t receive any part of the claim from the insurance.
Compare AIG and NTUC travel insurance
One of the benefits of NTUC Travel Insurance is that all of your travel delays are covered. This means that if you are stuck in the airport for over six hours, which is a common problem in international airports, you are covered. In addition if you schedule a tour or transport that is no longer in operation or cancel your trip, then you can also recover the costs as long as it is within three days before you are due to leave. Trip cancellation also covers insolvency of travel agencies.
If your trip is disrupted in any way because you or your traveling companion becomes ill or suffers injury, you are also covered through NTUC Travel Insurance. In fact, medical expenses are also covered on your trip including any injury or sickness that requires medical treatment. The only exception is that you can’t receive dental treatment from tooth, gum, other oral diseases or natural wearing of your teeth.
The greatest guarantee for protection comes from loss of money or loss of personal belongings. When you travel away from Singapore to other big cities, it’s important to have travel protection insurance that covers losing your items or theft. To make a claim, you have to report your loss to the police within 24 hours. There are some claims not provided for by NTUC Travel Insurance including fragile items, antiques, artifacts, manuscripts, paintings, dentures, fur, contact lenses, corneal lenses and musical instruments.
When a natural disaster threatens your vacations, it’s one of the most important times to have a good insurance package. NTUC Travel Insurance covers natural disasters and forces of nature that may strike in the area including earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions, floods, typhoons and hurricanes. To be a natural disaster, there has to be some financial, environmental or human loss. Bad weather does not count as a natural disaster.
On a brighter note, NTUC Travel Insurance does cover activities for leisure purposes such as scuba diving, snow skiing, water rafting and motorcycling. You can also recover administration charges incurred by tour operators, travel agents or transports for any postponement of your trip. Coverage is automatically extended if there are delays caused by unforeseen circumstances. NTUC Travel Insurance does not extend policies if you are hospitalized or quarantined resulting in the extension of your trip.
It’s wise to purchase travel protection insurance when you are going overseas to big cities, but you should consider all of the possibilities and situations that might arise wherever you go abroad. To guarantee that you’re covered, talk to your insurance provider beforehand and ask for agreements in writing to cover certain parts of your trip that may be excluded.
